Photo-voltaic solar energy enriches City of London

Photo-voltaics reaches the City of London — the Bishops Square development in Spitalfields.
Solarcentury has joined forces with Hammerson UK Properties to install 494 solar panels into the roof of the new Bishops Square development in London’s Spitalfields. This photo-voltaic installation is said to be the first of its kind within ‘the square mile’ and was supported by a £180 000 grant from the DTI’s Major Demonstration Programme. The solar panels replaced louvres that were in the original design to provide the added benefit of shading to the plant deck area. Jeremy Leggett, CEO of Solarcentury, comments, ‘This installation highlights the viability of photo-voltaics as a practical energy source. Almost every new development has the potential to incorporate some renewable energy generation, and, hopefully, Hammerson’s project will encourage others to follow suit.’
