Small-scale CHP cuts CO2

A 21% reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions for a group of retirement apartments in Cheltenham is being achieved using small-scale CHP, compared with centralised power generation and heating-only boiler plant. The DACHS unit was supplied by Baxi Technologies and serves Royal Court, which comprises 41 individual retirement apartments and communal facilities. The gas-fired CHP unit was installed as part of a refurbishment project, which was opened in 1985. it produces 12.5 kW of heat and 5.5 kW of 3-phase electricity. It achieves significant reductions in carbon-dioxide emissions, a key driver for the inclusions of CHP on this site by Bromford Housing Group. An exhaust condenser has been installed to maximise the thermal output and overall fuel efficiency.
