Underfloor heating adds to school’s environmental credentials

Contributing to the energy efficiency of a new environmentally conscious school in Kent is an LTHW underfloor heating system. The Robbens system in Riverhead Infants School is expected to achieve energy savings of 10 to 15% compared to traditional radiator-based heating systems. Externally, the school has a grass roof, covered almost entirely with sedum, which helps insulate the building and reduce heating requirements. Mark Anderton of services consultant Slender Winter Partnership says, ‘Modern construction, teamed with large floor areas within the building, meant that underfloor heating was the most appropriate heating system for this project. The system also provides low surface temperatures, which is safe for young children, and also all possible floor space can be used — a crucial requirement for a classroom environments.’ The system has six manifolds feeding individual heating zones.
