Ex-Or takes charge at Guildford College of Law

An Ex-Or lighting-control system at Guildford College of Laws has achieved substantial capital-cost savings over PC-based, software-driven systems.
Sophisticated lighting-management and control systems from Ex-Or were specified for the showcase 2-storey extension to the learning resource centre of Guildford College of Law. Consulting M&E engineers Jonathan Hart Associates wanted a lighting-management system to control the RIDI lighting fittings. Ex-Or’s LightSpot presence-detection system was installed throughout the building to switch lights on in occupied areas and off when people leave. The detectors also monitor natural light so as not to switch on lights when there is sufficient daylight. The extension is a multi-functional workspace accommodating activities such as conferences, meeting, presentations and lectures. Ex-Or’s SceneSelect II automatic scene setting and dimming system delivers differently lit environments at the touch of a button. In one area the movement of a partition to create two smaller areas from one large one is automatically detected and the lighting changed. Mike Noyes, senior electrical engineer with Jonathan Hart Associates, explains, ‘The lighting can be easily and quickly reprogrammed on site rather than having to send in a contractor. The facilities manager just has to point a hand-held programmer at one of the detectors, download information on current settings and then key in and beam the new settings back to the lights. ‘In addition, the Ex-Or system also offered substantial capital savings over PC-based, software-driven lighting-management control systems that were being considered at the time — both on the cost of the equipment and the cost of installation.’
