Honeywell ensures smooth maintenance at ice rink

Not one, but two ice pads are involved in the service and maintenance contract of Honeywell Building Solutions for iceSheffield and the neighbouring English Institute of Sport Sheffield.
Honeywell Building Solutions is responsible for service and maintenance at one of the best ice rinks in the UK, iceSheffield, and the neighbouring English Institute of Sport Sheffield. Both facilities are managed by Sheffield International Venues (SIV). The Honeywell contract includes servicing and maintaining boilers, pumps, air-handling units, ducts, chillers, gas radiant heaters and fire alarm systems — all made by third parties. Martin Clawson, SIV’s facilities manager, says, Using one company with the expertise and experience to handle a wide range of plant maintenance is cost effective and reduces administration time. Rather than having a number of specialists who visit occasionally and don’t know one end of an ice rink from the other, we have a locally based Honeywell engineer who knows the facility and our operational requirements, as well as the plant he is servicing. That is a real bonus. Ice Sheffield recently gained the highest mark for a standalone ice facility in the nationwide Quest awards. It is a £16 million, state-of-the art development and has hosted a wide range of successful events. They include the British Figure & Dance Championship and the Channel 4 series ‘The games’. There are two Olympic-size ice pads, two catering establishments, a conference/exhibition suite and a gym and dance studio. John Fowler of Honeywell Building Solutions says, ‘The SIV facilities are extremely popular, and we have worked with the customer to ensure that our maintenance programme does not interfere with their busy events timetable. This has meant scheduling maintenance outside of normal working hours.’
