Bilco smoke vents help protect London students

Automatic smoke vents supplied by Bilco protect residents in one of the largest accommodation blocks for students in the UK. The vents were specified for Queen Mary, University of London, by architect Fielden Clegg Bradley. the 14 double-leaf Lumivent vents were supplied to contractor Laing O’Rourke for Westfield Student Village, a development of three blocks with 995 bed spaces. Lumivents have a pitched design that minimises the settling of burning embers and have enhanced thermal insulation. They provide natural daylight through the multi-wall polycarbonate covers, that maximised the transmissions of light and limit solar heat gains. These double-leaf smoke vents are sited above stairwells and have four actuators. Each vent offers a clear area of 2.23 m2. If a vent opens in response to an alarm, it can be reset remotely.
