New church school enjoys underfloor heating

Comfort and safety for children in a new primary have been achieved using a Robbens underfloor heating system. The new Church of England primary school at Yaxham in Norfolk replaces a building dating from the nineteenth century. The single-storey building is a well insulated timber-frame construction with a much lower energy requirement than the old building. The roof is partly composite insulated steel plates and partly slate. There are three classrooms for the 90 pupils, kitchen and servery, toilet block, staff room and central activity hall, which is 5 m high from the floor to the top of the roof. Underfloor heating serves the entire school. It operates with low surface temperatures, ensuring safety for the young children and enabling every bit of floor and wall space to be fully utilised. The heating system covers 553 m2 and is installed in a concrete floor construction. Each heating zone has its own room thermostat to control the temperature of water flowing from the manifold into the concealed pipework loops.
