Pre-insulated ducting shows its paces in hospital project

ductwork
The ability of Kingspan’s KoolDuct pre-insulated ducting system to be installed up to three times faster than sheet-metal ductwork has been exploited in the new £4.5 million hospital sterilisation and decontamination unit for Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. 1400 m2 of KoolDuct was specified by consulting engineers Hoare Lea and installed by Solitaire Ventilation Management. The sterile-services unit is being moved from Castle Hill Hospital to Hessle Road in Hull as part of the £150 million improvement programme at the Castle Hill site to make way for new cardiac and surgical facilities. Another benefit of Koolduct for this project is that ventilation air flows over aluminium surfaces and does not have contact with material containing loose fibres. Steve Weston of Hoare Lea says, ‘The ease and speed with which KoolDuct can be installed and the convenience of manufacturing the system on site made it the ideal form of ducting for this project as time was of the essence.’ The KoolDuct system requires only a single-fix installation, compared with traditional sheet-metal ducting which needs to be vapour sealed and thermally insulated as a second operation.
