SFL flues play key role in energy-efficient heating

Flues
Providing the flueing arrangements to enable four 1000 kW boilers to be installed on a site on the west side of Edinburgh are these Supra lightweight flues from SFL.
To enable boiler plant serving the Wester Hailes Community Centre and High School on the west side of Edinburgh to be replaced with new condensing boilers, SFL supplied new flues to replace the previous mild-steel system. The original plant had been in operation for many years, and the client was anxious to upgrade and incorporate modern condensing appliances to improve economy and minimise emissions. Further energy savings were realised by decentralising some of the central-heating and hot-water loads, and replacing calorifiers with plate heat exchangers and buffer vessels. Four modulating condensing boilers, each with a maximum output of 1000 kW, were specified by consulting engineers EDP of Livingston. The boilers are individually vented by 600 mm-diameter Supra flues discharging at a height of 11.5 m. Supra flues have a single-skin stainless-steel construction and incorporate seals for moisture tightness. They are designed to provide pressure resistance up to 1000 Pa. Their light weight enables them to be run vertically externally and fixed to walls.
