Reflecting on the development of building services

What product has been the most influential in the development of the industry? Modern Building Services has teamed up with the organiser of the H&V07 exhibition to find the answer — and we want your vote. Read on.The history of modern building services is only about 200 years old and has been chronicled by CIBSE’s Heritage Group since 1973. With the development of the world-wide web and CIBSE’s own web site, that history is generally accessible at the CIBSE web site. Many of the products highlighted by the Heritage Group have defined and changed the course of the history of building-services engineering. Now the industry at large is being given the opportunity to vote on the product that has been the most influential in the development of the industry. All the items of equipment described below are landmarks in the history of building-services engineering. This Hall of Fame campaign is an initiative associated with the H&V07 exhibition at the National Exhibition from 27 February to 1 March, and the organiser has partnered with Modern Building Services to promote this campaign. Details of the 10 nominations chosen by the CIBSE Heritage Group are given in this special feature, and readers are invited to make their vote in a special section of the show’s web site via the link below. The winning product will be announced at a special event on the first day of the show. CIBSE’s Heritage Group was set up in 1973 to discover and record all aspects of the history of building-services engineering. Its web site is a treasure trove of history of the industry from its beginnings in the Industrial Revolution — and even before that. H&V07 is one of the largest exhibitions in the industry. Almost a hundred companies have booked stands, and there will certainly be more by the time the show opens. This event confines itself to heating and ventilation, but runs alongside RAC07, which covers air conditioning and refrigeration. Over 130 companies are already booked for RAC07, including major air-conditioning names such as Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Sanyo and LG. These two shows are held every other year and attract large numbers of visitors. In 2005, there were over 6500 visitors to the H&V event and 7500 to RAC. Both events have a comprehensive programme of seminars and technical presentation. Using the link below† to vote for the winner of the Hall of Fame also enables you to register as a visitor to H&V07 and also for RAC07 (just click the RAC07 logo to switch sites). Enjoy the history lesson, and then take action to look to the future of the industry. Use the first link below to read teh entries for theH&V07 Hall of Fame.
