HVCA declares commitment to 2012 Olympic Games

The Heating & Ventilating Contractors’ Association has become a signatory to the construction commitments charter developed by the Strategic Forum for Construction in relationship to the 2012 Olympic Games. To help the industry deliver the infrastructure for the London Olympics, the Strategic Forum for Construction has formed a 2012 task group to facilitate liaison between industry, Government, the Olympic Deliver Authority and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. The construction-commitments document identified six elements that are seen as vital to the safe, on-time and on-budget delivery of the London Olympics. They are procurement and integration, commitment to people, client leadership, sustainability, design quality and health and safety. Robert Higgs, chief executive of HVCA, explains that the Olympic Games offer a unique opportunity for the UK construction industry to showcase its very best elements — in particular ‘by undertaking sustainable, energy-efficient projects that will provide long-term benefits for local communities and the nation as a whole’. Individual members of the joint major contractors’ group of HVCA and the Electrical Contractors’ Association, which comprises the UK’s largest mechanical- and electrical-services contractors, have also signed up to the construction-commitments concept.
