Retrofit air-conditioning achieves Part L compliance

Retrofit
Cooling, heating and Part L compliance have all been achieved for a period building in London’s West End by a 2-pipe City Multi system supplied by Mitsubishi Electric.
Faced with retrofitting air conditioning into a prestigious central-London address, Air Conditioning Solutions (ACS) replaced the existing cooling-only system with five Mitsubishi Electric PURY-P City Multi heat-recovery units. Gloucester Place Business Centre in London’s West End is an elegant 5-storey period building which combines old with new. Each office of this multi-tenanted building still has the original Edwardian fireplaces, for example. ACS chose this City Multi system for its ability to provide simultaneous heating and cooling using two pipes instead of the industry norm of three. The equipment also has a small footprint, helping to reduce installation time and space needed for this project for Lenta Business Centres. David Knibbs of ACS says, ‘The operating efficiencies of the City Multi kit are also high, meaning that the building’s Part L constraints were easily achieved.’ A team of four had four weeks to remove the old system and install and commission the new one. Five compressors sited outdoors serve 33 indoor units. Low-level ducted units serve most of the building, enabling the use of architectural casings in keeping with the interior of the building. The whole system is controlled by a G50 web-based controller, with a router for remote operation. It can provide SMS text messaging and e-mail fault reporting to ACS so that a response can be made quickly and with minimum disruption to the customer.
