District heating is made easy at Catherine Mill

The district-heating system serving Catherine Mill in Whitehave has been upgraded and its performance improved by installing Nexus thermal interface units from MHS Boilers.
Heating and hot-water services for 31 flats, offices and communal areas at Catherine Mill in Whitehaven are provided by a district-heating scheme using 36 Nexus units from MHS Boilers. Nexus units provide heating and instantaneous hot water at up to 19 l/min, drawing energy from the district-heating loop. The energy use of each occupant is communicated from the Nexus metering system via a modem to British Gas in Manchester for billing. The heat meters, from Siemens Building Technologies, are connected via an M-Bus system to the energy supplier’s offices for remote monitoring of energy consumption and billing. The new system replaces old thermal stores, which were inadequately insulated and caused problems with thermostatic control The central boiler plant has been retained. The Nexus units are much smaller than the original thermal stores. The system was designed and specified by Ken Wilkinson and Peter James of Wilkinson James Partnership in Workington. Ken Wilkinson says, ‘The units were simple to install, and we were able to keep the existing plant room and equipment, which meant there was minimum disruption to residents.
