Top firms support new CIBSE flexible training initiative

A number of top firms in the industry have signed up for a new flexible learning programme aimed at addressing the growing shortage of qualified building-services engineers, launched by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. Companies currently face a shortage of new staff and graduate entrants with the required practical and technical building-services knowledge and competencies. CIBSE’s flexible learning programme tackles this issue directly, providing specific pragmatic knowledge to fill in knowledge gaps, develop relevant skills and ensure progression through the industry. Early adopters already supporting the scheme include Arup, FaberMaunsell, Hoare Lea and Crown House (Laing O’Rourke). John Armstrong, president of CIBSE, says, ‘As the building-services sector is becoming more complex, it is vital that we address the skills gap and provide the underpinning knowledge to turn potential into capability. This programme will provide cost-effective, flexible and on-demand training that addresses the needs of the individual and the industry.’ The programme covers key topics such as acoustics, cables, drainage, heating, pipes and ventilation and consists of written material, e-learning and web-based resources and optional short-course/workshop modules. It is based on CIBSE guides and the knowledge series, which are regarded as industry standards and will allow new entrants to the industry to fill in gaps in their professional knowledge.
