Maintenance-free junction boxes meet requirements of Wiring Regulations

To meet the needs of the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations for maintenance-free junction boxes to be installed in inaccessible locations, such as under a floor with a fitted carpet, Hager has introduced a box under the Ashley brand. Jane Yorke, product manager with Ashley, explains, ‘Appendix 15 of the 17th edition states that junction boxes with screw terminals must be accessible for inspection or use maintenance-free terminals. The Electrical Safety Council Technical Manual states that a fitted carpet can effectively render connections beneath a floor inaccessible.’ This range of junction boxes has sprung push-fit terminals that do not relax and so do not need to be accessible for future inspection. Tests on these terminals have included long-term vibration, shock, long-term connection, pull-out, voltage drop, temperature rise and exposure to corrosive atmospheres. It is faster and easier to install than alternatives prescribed by the regulations, such as soldering. The terminals accept and secure solid, stranded or flexible conductors from 0.5 to 4 mm2. Twin and CPC and flexible cords can all be mixed. Cable clamps are reversible to allow single or double cable entry. There are two junction boxes — 3-terminal 32 A and a 4-terminal 20 A.
