JS humidifiers exhibit fine performance at Tate Modern

Trials with Neptronic SKE steam humidifiers from JS Humidifiers at Tate Modern have led to their widespread installation in three Tate buildings in London
Two Neptronic SKE resistive steam humidifiers from JS Humidifiers have been installed at Tate Modern in London to maintain the optimum atmosphere around the exhibits. These humidifiers were originally trialled at Tate Modern four years ago. Their success has let to 16 units being installed across Tate Modern, Tate Britain and Tate Stores buildings in London. In total, these humidifiers can provide up to 930 kg/h of steam. Mike Freeland, facilities manager with Spie Matthew Hall, manages the HVAC systems at the Tate galleries. He commissioned the trial with JS Humidifiers as the air-handling system previously incorporated electrode boiler humidifiers that were very expensive to maintain. Two Neptronic units were installed alongside the existing humidifiers and monitored for three months. Mike Freeland explains, Over the trial period, the Neptronic SKE humidifiers proved very successful in maintaining our required humidity. The resistive-element humidifiers also significantly reduced our maintenance required as very little limescale built up within the boiling chambers. This presented a considerable saving compared to regularly buying the disposable boiling cylinders and elements that electrode-boiler humidifiers incorporate. ‘Given the success of the installations to far, we will be continuing to replace the older humidifiers in our HVAC systems over the coming years.’ Heating elements in these humidifiers undergo significant expansion and contraction during heating cycles, cracking scale from their surfaces so that it can be flushed away during normal operation. A JS planned-maintenance agreement ensures that humidification systems are kept in optimum conditions without burdening the in-house maintenance staff.
