Using Ex-Or’s MLS Connect Digital system, electrical contractor N. G. Bailey was able to install the managed lighting system for a major refurbishment at a further-education college more quickly and easily than with conventional wiring and connection methods. The installation is part of the major refurbishment of Fife College in Kirkcaldy, a 1970s tower-block building that is being rebuilt in two phases into a state-of-the-art learning centre. Both phases incorporate managed-lighting systems provided by Ex-Or. MLS Connect Digital allows luminaires and detectors to be connected with no on-site wiring, eliminating wiring faults. As a college, it has changing and unpredictable levels of space occupation, so it is important for lighting to be easily programmable and quickly changeable according to the movement of people and usage. The project includes the LightSpot presence-detection system that continuously monitors occupancy and controls light use accordingly. Among special requirements was the facility to control lit areas such as dance and fitness studios, performance spaces, restaurant and beauty therapy areas. Derek Main, senior electrical engineer with consultants RMJM, says ‘The client needed a competent, commissioned system that would fulfil the lighting requirements and provide maximum flexibility in use. Ex-Or was given the specifications in terms of space and potential usage and came up with a fully detailed design.’
