Automatic switching of lighting based on presence and movement detectors from CP Electronics is reducing energy consumption at the McArthur Glen designer outlet in Cheshire Oaks.
As part of a strategy to reduce energy consumption, PIR and microwave presence detectors from CP Electronics have been installed throughout non-retail areas at the McArthur Glen designer outlet in Cheshire Oaks. They have replaced manual light switches as part of a wide-ranging project to improve energy efficiency. This designer outlet village near Ellesmere Port covers nearly 180 000 m2 and has over 145 designer stores. Mark Hughes, maintenance manager with McArthur Glen, explained, ‘Introduction of occupancy detection forms part of an overall strategy within McArthur Glen to make optimum use of energy and minimise environmental impact. We are trialling various strategies at Cheshire Oaks before rolling them out to the other outlets and are already seeing significant energy savings after just two months.’ Presence detectors have been installed in all back-of-house areas, corridors, staff and public toilets in the food courts, offices, storage areas and staff changing rooms. Most use PIR sensor to switch lighting on. In toilets, microwave detectors bring on lights as soon as the door begins to open.
