Mains sockets designed for medical equipment only

socket

MK Electric has added isolated power supply (IPS) sockets to its collection of devices dedicated to healthcare. These sockets help healthcare establishments meet the requirements of MEIGaN (Medical Electrical Installation Guidance Notes).

These sockets fulfil a recommendation that IPS outlets are double-pole switched or unswitched. They should also be clean earth and colour-coded blue with engraved white lettering stating ‘Medical Equipment Only’. Where white sockets are preferred, they should be on a blue background about 2 cm larger than the socket, with the socket labelled ‘Medical Equipment Only’ in blue lettering.

An IPS socket is required to increase supply resilience by reducing the impact of first fault conditions downstream of the IPS, which is usually combined with an uninterruptible power supply.

The use of these sockets with equipment that may have high earth-leakage currents is to be avoided.

Domestic extension leads are not permitted, and sufficient sockets should be provided to avoid their use.
