Heat pumps teams up with condensing water heater

Lochinvar pumps
A Lochinvar condensing water heater and air-source heat pump provide energy-efficient hot water in this pub and restaurant in Oxfordshire.

An air-source heat pump and a Lochinvar EcoForce+ gas-fired condensing water heating using LPG work together to provide hot water for the Great Western Arms, a traditional Oxfordshire pub and restaurant. This pub has recently added five bedrooms as part of a major refurbishment.

The work included upgrading heating and hot-water systems, replacing a cast-iron boiler and indirect hot-water cylinder with modern high-efficiency equipment. The heat pump heats feed water to 40°C, which is raised to 65°C by the EcoForce+. Space heating for the new bedrooms, the pub and restaurant is provided by radiators and a Lochinvar CP-M 60 boiler.

David Pepper, managing director of Lochinvar, says, ‘The air-source heat pump/water-heater package is a really good solution for commercial applications like the Great Western Arms. Combining the use of the low-carbon heat-pump technology and a condensing gas-fired water heater has provided an efficient, environmentally friendly solution without compromising hot-water supply.

‘Separate plant for space heating and hot water is widely recognised as good practice in terms of energy conservation.’
