Air-conditioning system in tune with La Scala

The renovation of La Scala in Milan features air-conditioning systems design by Trane to overcome the special problems of this renowned theatre. Three chillers with a combined cooling capacity of nearly 3000 kW use R134a. They are connected to the hydraulic network of Milan and use groundwater for heat rejection. The installation includes 600 fan-coil units and 20 air-handling units. The water-cooled chillers are expected to achieve a COP of 5.76, compared with the 2.2 to 2.8 that can be expected from air-cooled chillers. The maximum cooling load is nearly 2000 kW, so one machine is always on standby. They can respond quickly to variations in loads, running up from 20% to full capacity very quickly. These chillers were subjected to rigourous factory tests. Particular attention was paid to their capacity with the 13°C condenser-water temperature imposed by the project.
