Drainage acoustics becoming an issue

Low-noise drainage — by extruding two materials of different densities together to form Friaphon pipe, Durapipe has addressed the problem of noise from above-ground drainage and internal rainwater applications.

Durapipe is advising consultants and installers to give priority to pipe acoustics and sound insulation with the guidance in Part E of the Building Regulations on acoustic requirements. Although Part E does not currently include noise levels for plumbing and drainage systems, as acoustic improvements are made in other areas, noise from pipework will become increasingly more noticeable to end users. As a result, Durapipe believes that decision makers should already be looking to lay down maximum sound levels in current contracts. Martyn Rowlands, head of marketing for Durapipe UK, says, ‘Acoustics is already high on the public’s agenda, and we have seen a significant rise in interest for our Friaphon sound-attenuated drainage system as contractors look to meet the increasing acoustic requirements in modern buildings. ‘In light of Part E and revisions to standards such as DIN 4109-10, which looks at the sound-pressure levels emitted by sanitary installations for residential buildings, we can only see this issue becoming even more prominent in the future.
