Energy efficiency in Wimbledon

Designed for energy efficiency, the new headquarters of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development has its services installed by Inviron.

Energy conservation was a key part of the design brief for the new headquarters of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development in Wimbledon. Among the energy-efficient systems is a roof-mounted solar system supplied and installed by Inviron and providing a supplementary source of water heating. Inviron was responsible for the £2.2 million M&E Services installation. The focal point of the building is a central atrium incorporating 5000 m2 of tiered office space over five floors, enhanced by a fully glazed bowed frontage and specialist energy-efficient lighting systems. Office workstations are lit by gull-wing lighting systems with passive infra-red sensors to switch power off after 15 minutes of inactivity. Most of the supplementary and feature lighting is operated by dusk-to-dawn photo-electric cells. Energy from the exhaust air of the air-conditioning system is transferred to incoming air by a thermal wheel. Inviron Facilities Management & Service has been awarded a contract for planned preventive maintenance of M&E systems and small-works M&E. Consultants were Rybka Battle. Inviron’s project manager Bob Wilson says, ‘Completed over a 12-month time frame, the M&E fitout has been both extremely challenging yet very satisfying. The finished building is not only an absolute state-of-the art working environment enhanced by the very latest in energy-conservation technology, but a work of art that will grace Wimbledon for many, many years to come.’
