Climate Change Minister sees advanced renewable energy

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker has visited One New Change, the new shopping and leisure destination in the City of London, to see advanced renewable-energy technology used to provide heating and cooling. There is 60 km of pipework in the ground underneath this development to transfer heat to and from the ground itself and two water wells 150 m below the surface. The system is designed to reduce carbon emissions by at least 10% and could save £300 000 a year on energy bills a year.

Francis Salway, chief executive of developer Land Securities, said, ‘We are proud to be pioneering this highly advanced renewable-energy system at One New Change. The shopping and leisure destination is transforming the City of London, and now with this technology we hope to transform the way the industry designs and builds properties. The renewable-energy system will deliver carbon reduction, cost savings and a comfortable work environment, making it a truly sustainable building of the future.’

Hoare Lea designed the office and retail MEP system and provided specialist advice regarding vertical transportation, together with sustainability and energy-systems expertise. The ground works were carried out by Geothermal International.
