Actionair cuts 40% off energy used by fan-coil units

Electronically commutated fan motors are the key to the low energy consumption of new fan-coil units from Actionair.
Actionair’s Enviropac Series EHW 230 fan-coil units are said to use 40% less energy than conventional fan-coil units and generate only a third of the fan-motor heat gain. Chiller loading is also considerably reduced. This range of FCUs has water-side control and maintains constant volume regardless of downstream pressure drop. The key to the lower energy use is the use of energy-efficient electronically commutated motors to drive the twin impellers. These FCUs are designed to operate at constant volume against pressures from 10 to 60 Pa. The volume can be set at the factory using a potentiometer to send a constant voltage to the fan power module. The only commissioning requirement is to balance the airflow through each branch. Until the room load is met, an EHW 230 fan-coil unit runs at the selected speed and duty and the related noise level. Once the temperature setpoint is reached and the space is under control, the unit throttles back by automatically reducing fan speed in response to a setback signal from the controller.

More refrigerant bans possible, says government

The government could tighten up the rules that restrict the use of global warming refrigerant gases including speeding up phase-out programmes and introducing new bans, according to a spokesman from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Baxi research suggests schools strongly support heat decarbonisation

A survey conducted by Baxi of 200 state school estates managers, consultant engineers and M&E contractors has found that while enthusiasm for Net Zero and support for low carbon heating systems in schools is thriving, persistent barriers remain.
