Fire and smoke dampers

Guidance on the application and installation of fire and smoke dampers has been published by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, filling a serious information gap. Entitled ‘An industry guide to design for the installation of fire and smoke-resisting dampers’, it emphasises the importance of installing dampers as recommended by each manufacturer and encourages specifiers to ensure that only fully fire-tested dampers are used. The scope of the guide covers scope, definitions, damper types, main design criteria and responsibilities, system, design, recommendations for installers and comments on the selection of suitable fire-protection materials for making good after installation. It also contains details of test methods for fire-resisting dampers and assessment of test date. ASFP also publishes guidance on fire-rated and smoke-outlet ductwork. Both guides can be downloaded from the web site.
