Setting the standard for medium-secure hospital

Interserve, Kingspan
A fully co-ordinated M&E approach and prefabricated wall panels for a medium-secure hospital unit in Devon is setting a new standard for such establishments.

The £21 million ProCure21 contract to redevelop the medium-secure unit at Langdon Hospital in Dawlish, Devon, saw Interserve using Kingspan’s KBS load-bearing system and a fully co-ordinated M&E approach. The system was developed with Interserve’s management team to address the specific needs of the project, which also included speed of build, dimensional accuracy, removal of site health-and-safety issues and robustness of the internal linings.

The internal linings were stringently tested with heavy implements to simulate a sustained attack to demonstrate their robustness to Devon Partnership NHS Trust.

To keep services well out of the reach of patients and to enable the facilities-management engineering staff to carry out service and maintenance work without entering occupied areas, Interserve created purpose-built M&E corridors in the roof of the building immediately above occupied areas.

Secondary services branches run away from these main arterial service runs and drop via individual service shafts to serve patients’ bedrooms and their en-suites, and also to administrative and communal areas.

The design of the 6182 m2 hospital was produced by Devereux Architects with the hospital’s clinicians and Interserve. The project is due for completion in 2013.
