KoolDuct transports air in transport museum
Kingspan’s KoolDuct System provided a space-saving single-fix installation for the Riverside Museum of Travel & Transport in Glasgow. This £75 million project has proved a huge success and welcomed over a million visitors in the first six months.
Maximising the effect of the fluid and futuristic building design from architect Zaha Hadid was a key factor for the 7000 m2 exhibition space. All building services, including the air-distribution ductwork system, therefore had to be concealed. As a result, all services were routed through a vast network of trenches.
Space in the trenches was very restricted, making KoolDuct pre-insulated HVAC ductwork the ideal choice, thanks to its space-saving abilities. The space that is normally required to manually lag ductwork is no longer required. KoolDuct can be fixed flush to surfaces, typically saving up to 200 mm in a single dimension.
The ductwork was installed by Ductform Ventilation. Using KoolDuct enabled the company to guarantee the final dimensions of the ductwork and so construct it to within millimetres of the trench dimensions.
Displays in the Riverside Museum include a Victorian tall ship, a South African steam locomotive and a ‘wall of motorbikes’.
