New boilers for old — Potterton Commercial cast-iron units have replaced 30-year old boilers of the same brand at Warwick Castle.

Warwick Castle’s heating system has been refurbished using three Potterton Commercial cast-iron boilers. They were installed by Batchelor & Hodges for Merlin Entertainments Group, the castle’s current owner. Previous owners of the castle, which dates back to the 13th century, include Richard Neville, better known as ‘Warwick the Kingmaker’ during the Wars of the Roses.

Heating for the previous 30 years had been provided by Potterton Commercial boilers, so when the time came to replace them, Warwick Castle’s estates department was keen to use the same brand — now part of Baxi Commercial Division.

Each of the cast-iron boilers, selected with the help of Baxi commercial division’s Midlands area sales manager Mark Field, has an output of 170 kW and comprises six sections. They are fitted with matched natural-gas burners and serve existing vintage cast-iron radiators, as well as convectors.

The section design overcame access issues. To minimise inconvenience to day-to-day operations, the boilers had to be delivered to site before 9 a.m. and installed in a single day. They are connected to the site’s building-management system, which has been upgraded to facilitate control and monitoring of the newly installed equipment.
