Plymouth school enjoys transition from oil to gas

MHS Boilers, space heating
From floor-standing oil-fired boilers and tanks to MHS wall-hung gas-fired boilers — the transformed boiler room at a school in Plymouth.

The complete refurbishment of the 60-year-old heating and hot-water system of a school in Plymouth has been achieved using equipment from MHS Boilers. Mount Wise Community Primary School is now served by two 100 kW Thision L wall-mounted boilers and a 500 l Thision WH hot-water generator. There is also a Pisces pressurisation unit and 300 l Gemini calorifier.

The new gas-fired equipment replaces aging oil-fired units. The boilers provide space heating, and the Thision WH supplies kitchens and washrooms with instantaneous hot water.

The project was undertaken by Plymouth City Council’s corporate property department. David Oatway, building-services engineer with the council, explains, ‘One benefit of the new equipment has been improved access to the plant room. Previously the floor-standing oil boilers and tank took up such a large area, it made maintenance and servicing quite tricky. With the wall-mounted Thision L units, it’s no longer and issue, as all units are easily accessible.’

The installation was completed by H&V engineers Murch & Baker of Totnes. Founder and managing director Paul Murch says, ‘Overall, the retrofit has been a great success, as the client is extremely happy with the new system.’
