Data centre achieves major cut in chiller energy use

A 38% reduction in the energy consumption of chillers at two Lloyds Bank data centres has been achieved following modifications carried out by Excalibur Energy. Pilot installations were undertaken to two chillers, involving the installation of liquid-pressure amplification (LPA) and EC condenser fans. Energy use and cooling load were monitored for a period before and after the work.

The 700 kW Liebert chillers incorporate free cooling and have Bitzer compressors using R407C. They provide chilled water to server rooms.

The installation of LPA allows the chillers to be decommissioned for efficient floating head-pressure operation, which increases cooling capacity and reduces absorbed power. The better performance of the EC fans added to the 38% energy savings due to LPA.
