New B&ES president commits to continuous improvement

Responding to continuing challenges — B&ES president Bruce Bisset.

Bruce Bisset, the new president of the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES) has urged members to continue looking forward in the way they approach business. The principal theme of his inaugural address was that business today simply isn’t done the way it was five years ago and that everyone involved in the construction process must ensure that what is done tomorrow is an undeniable improvement on what was done yesterday.’

He also remarked that it was just 16 months since the membership had voted overwhelmingly for a new identity that fully reflected the scope of the work they undertook in today’s complex construction process. The new identity is enabling the association to be repositioned as ‘the natural home for all specialists across building engineering services.’

He says, ‘The key driver is our determination that B&ES will remain entirely “fit for purpose” against the backdrop of an ever-developing industry and will deliver the services, the assistance and the support we will all need in order to survive, to flourish and to prosper in the years ahead.’

Among industry drivers are the long and ferocious economic downturn, technological advances, improved working practices and the emergence of the low-carbon economy, prompting Bruce Bisset to insist, ‘We must therefore be prepared to take a complete and multi-disciplinary view of the sector in which we operate. We must further enhance our already considerable status as the setter of technical standards across building engineering services. We must develop ever closer and more positive relationships with sister organisations that represent the disciplines with which we interact in our normal working lives — including manufacturers, consulting engineers, end users and clients.’
