Demand-controlled ventilation is a first for a hospital kitchen

Quintex, demand controlled kitchen ventilation

Mile End Hospital in London is the first hospital in the UK to use the Cheetah demand-controlled ventilation system from Quintex in its kitchen. The system has been installed in the main kitchen of the hospital, which is part of Barts Health NHS Trust. The kitchen cooks food for staff and events.

The system will save nearly 50 MWh and over 13 to of CO2 a year. Payback will be within two years.

The Cheetah system uses sensors to detect cooking activity levels and match extract rates to cooking demands. The system is also used by companies such as Tesco, Ikea, JD Wetherspoon, Whitbread and Center Parcs.

Steve Royce, head of estates at the hospital, said, ‘We have been delighted by how simple the system is and how much energy we have been able to save.’

Simon Jarman, chief executive of Quintex, says, ‘We’re now working closely with Barts Health to progress rolling out the system to other hospitals in the trust.’
