Gas-fired air-conditioning beats electricity shortage

To overcome the lack of an adequate electricity supply, McQuay has supplied five Sanyo gas-fired GHP chillers for the new Nobu restaurant in London’s Mayfair.

Sanyo’s gas-fired GHP chiller system has been installed to provide heating and cooling for the new Nobu restaurant in Berkley Street in the Mayfair area of London. It was supplied by MacQuay UK, which has become the first British distributor to supply one of these systems. Cooling and heating for this Japanese restaurant is based on five Sanyo ECO G gas heat-pump units and a complimentary number of water heat exchangers. They were chosen because there is an inadequate local electricity supply. These 50 kW units are mounted on the roof and feed five air-handling units. Alan Bentley of M&E consultant The Environmental Engineering Partnership, explains, ‘In normal circumstances, this situation would have needed a new sub-station, but the Sanyo solution offered by McQuay overcame this problem. ‘Being a reverse-cycle system, the Sanyo equipment can also provide additional heating capacity — eliminating the need for more boiler power.’ Three GHP units serve the restaurant areas, drinks and sushi bars. The other two chillers serve food-preparation and kitchens.
