The use of Kingspan Industrial Insulation’s Kooltherm FM pipe-insulation system has helped two buildings in Aberdare achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ pre-assessment. They are Aberdare Community School and Sobell Leisure Centre (pictured) at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s £50 million redevelopment of the Ynys site in Aberdare.

Laing O’Rourke oversaw the phased construction programme, with the new leisure centre completed before the existing building was demolished.

With thermal conductivities as low as 0.025 W/mK, the Kooltherm FM system is said to be the most thermally efficient commonly used pipe insulation.

Managing site waste was another prime concern. To help limit this, the pipe insulation was supplied in boxes that could be used several times and with an accompanying crate. The thermal efficiency of the system reduced the thickness of pipe insulation required and, consequently, the volume of product for the project.

Adrian Bourne, project manager with Laing O’Rourke, commented, ‘We worked with Kingspan Industrial Insulation because of their willingness to trial new methods for reducing waste with reusable boxes. The company was engaged in the process from concept stage through to on-site implementation.

The insulation, which has an A+ Green Guide summary rating, was installed by Linear Insulation.
