Sky’s the limit for Zumtobel Lighting’s continuous light line

Zumtobel Lighting, continuous lighting

Zumtobel Lighting’s Spotlight Infinity continuous-light-line system gave Sky the look it wanted for office lighting in its Believe in Better building along with the required performance. The brief was to provide a high degree of transparency between the various spaces and rooms, continuity in lighting and luminaire appearance, combined with a cohesive overall arrangement.

As lead lighting designer for the project, Arup’s lighting group worked with the architecture team to develop the concept. This led to the idea of using seamless runs of diffuse linear light. With the proposed run lengths of up to 29 m through the space, any inconsistencies in the lit effect or joins in the diffuser would be obvious, so a perfectly even, single-piece, continuous diffuser was critical to the success of the project.

Luminaires are precisely centred over key content displays to focus attention; they terminate tight to the walls to fully express the ceiling plane.

The office design has a series of glazed partitions and contains flat-screen monitors, so reflection studies were needed to determine the positioning of the lines. One of the four diffuser types available achieves a glare rating of UGR

The Spotlight system installed incorporates eBox, a centralised emergency-power supply that eliminates the need for Ni-Cd batteries.
