Lightweight ducting takes weight off designer’s mind

Gatehouse
Weight limitations that prevented the installation of sheet-metal ducting in this Chichester venue have been overcome using Kingspan’s lightweight KoolDuct system.
The lightweight properties of Kingspan’s KoolDuct system of pre-insulated ducting have been exploited for the JD Wetherspoons pub/restaurant in Chichester. Lloyds No 1 Bar was created from an existing single-storey steel-frame structure. The structural loading of this type of building does not normally have a service load capacity to permit a high density of ductwork with a suspended ceiling. Consulting engineers Mark Anthony Partnership solved the problem using the KoolDuct system because it is only an eighth of the weight of sheet-metal ducting. Choosing this system assisted in the detailed loading calculation that were necessary. Not only would sheet-metal ducting have been far too heavy, but the insulation cladding required would have added further to the load. The cost was comparable to that of sheet-metal ducting because the ease of installation reduced labour costs. 500 m2 of KoolDuct was installed by Eagle Fabrications throughout the building on the upper levels. literature.uk@insulation.kingspan.com
