Prefabrication means contractors spend less time in prison

Weighing over 30 t, the prefabricated plant room built by Armstrong Integrated Systems for a Birmingham prison assisted security by reducing installation time and contractor access.
The specification of a plant room made off-site has assisted security at a prison by drastically reducing installation time and contractor access. The 3200 kW LPHW plant room includes storage for hot water and was made for HMP Birmingham, formerly known as Winson Green Prison, by Armstrong Integrated Systems. It measures 10 x 7 x 2.9 m and weighs over 30 t. It was delivered in two sections and craned onto a precast foundation. Only final connections were required on site. This plant room was required for further decentralisation of the site’s heating and hot-water system. It contains four 800 kW gas-fired boilers, acoustic burner shrouds, two 65 l/s circulation pumps, DHW load levellers, metering, pressurisation equipment, air and dirt separation, electrical works, fire-alarm system, pipework, valves and installation. Four flues leave the plant room onto two central support masts. A separate gas-booster was also supplied, measuring 5 x 3 m and 2.5 m high.
