New air conditioning uses old pipework to save costs
Substantial savings in the cost of renewing air conditioning in this office building in Daventry were achieved using Mitsubishi Electric’s Replace system.
Air conditioning in a small office block in Daventry was upgraded in a few days, rather than weeks, by using Mitsubishi Electric’s Replace Multi Technology. The building owner estimates a saving of over £3800 using Replace technology. This system enabled contractor Chillaire of Nuneaton to retain the pipework of the previous R22 system and use it for the new R407C system. Existing wiring was also retained. St Clements Services, which owns the building, replaced the old air conditioning with a City Multi Y system to provide both heating and cooling. The 275 m2 area on the second floor required a cooling capacity of 30.3 kW, which is provided by a Replace Multi Y Series outdoor unit to deliver heating or cooling to the indoor units. Two rooms have ducted indoor units, and three wall-mounted units serve the other rooms. To demonstrate the efficiency of the new system, the building was monitored for a month in the early summer with the air conditioning in use for 482 h. The energy cost for this period was £56.37, or 20 p/m2 per month. The COP of the outdoor unit was calculated at 3.28, based on monitoring power consumption every 15 minutes and using outside air temperatures provided by the Met Office.
