Carrier control system makes possible stage refurbishment of ducted air conditioning

Staged refurbishment of ducted air conditioning in this office block near Oxford during a letting ‘window’ was made possible using Carrier’s 3V VAV control system.
As part of the refurbishment of the largest office block on the Oasis Business Park outside Oxford, Carrier’s newest 3V variable-air-volume control system has made it possible to reduce energy bills, control the office environment more precisely and timetable chiller replacement to suit budgets. This building was constructed in the late 1980s and was originally air conditioned using Carrier packaged chillers supplying cooled air through ductwork to Carrier Moduline VAV terminals controlled by the Carrier Gen II system. The roof-top chillers use R22 and need replacing. However, a letting void necessitated earlier refurbishment of the offices and for changes to air-conditioning controls to be compatible with forthcoming replacement plant. The 3V open-protocol system can be integrated with other controls without the need for expensive and complex interfaces. The new networked control system also extends the life of the existing air-conditioning system. The ductwork has been retained and the room sensors and controllers changed. The wiring loop enables any unit to act as a master or slave, making the system more flexible and enhancing letting opportunities for the space, as changes of address enable different thermostats to control different air terminals. The 3V control system can be used for any ducted air-conditioning system. Existing tenants, which include WS Atkins and The Carbon Trust, have suffered little inconvenience as rewiring work has been carried out at weekends.
