Cable tray cuts labour costs for cancer-treatment centre

Considerable reductions in installation time for cabled services in the new £87 million cancer-treatment centre in Glasgow have been achieved using Cablofil steel-wire cable tray. As mechanical- and electrical-services provider, AMEC used 20 km of Cablofil CF 54 steel-wire cable tray throughout the new centre, which is due to open in 2007. It includes some of the world’s most advanced equipment for cancer care. It will serve a population of 2.6 million and replaces existing oncology units at three Glasgow hospitals. AMEC selected steel-wire cable tray for power, data, fire-alarm and communications and to service the radiation therapy suites. Matthew Way, managing director of Cablofil in the UK, explains, ‘Putting cable-management systems in place can be one of the most time-consuming elements of any new build or refurbishment. One of the many benefits of using Cablofil tray on a job like this is that it is extremely quick and easy to install. It offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and it can be cut to size on site.’ CF 54 tray was used in a variety of widths from 50 to 600 mm, along with a selection of fast-fix couplers. AMEC also used this tray for heavy sub-mains cables up to 90 mm in diameter. Cablofil products can be quickly moulded and shaped on site using bolt cutters. The flexible mesh structure means it is not necessary to use extra strips and connectors to achieve the correct fit and shape. Additional cables or cable-management structures can be added with minimal disruption.
