Church conversion enjoys underfloor heating

Ancient and modern — this penthouse created as part of the conversion of a church is heated by an Even-Heat underfloor system.

Heating for a luxury penthouse created during the conversion of a church into 12 apartments is provided by an Even-Heat underfloor heating system. The conversion of the former United Reform Church at Beckenham in Kent into Spire Court is an award-winning scheme by WDS Design. In the 280 m2 penthouse, many architectural features of the old building are matched with today’s high-tech essentials. The huge living area has carved wood buttresses and Gothic window arches, with a built-in plasma television and uplighters integrated into the floor, alongside the Even-Heat system. The underfloor heating serves all areas, including four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The space between the joists of the timber suspended floor was packed with insulation before the Even-Heat system was installed. The heating comprises special aluminium heat diffusion plates with PE-x pipework in two grooves at 200 mm centres. Pipework loops are connected to a gas-fired condensing boiler via discreetly located manifolds. A chipboard deck provides the surface for carpets in most areas, ceramic tiles in the bathrooms and quality vinyl in the kitchen
