Effective underfloor heating for the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness is provided by Raychem electrical systems.
Energy-efficient underfloor heating systems are being installed in the Piers Arts Centre in Stromness, Orkney, to provide background heating. The museum is being renovated and regenerated, with an extension to link the two existing buildings. The Raychem systems are being used extensively, including the entrance, galleries, lobbies and cloakroom areas. This 3-storey arts and exhibition centre is a cultural landmark and houses a collection of twentieth-century exhibits charting the development of modern art in Britain. It includes key works by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo. The systems were specified by K. J. Tait and supplied by Smith Electrical for installation by Orkney Mechanical. 1100 m of T2Red self-regulating cable has been installed beneath wooden flooring. 23 Raychem T2 QuickNet power mat kits have been installed under tiled and stone floor surfaces. The self-regulating heating cables provide zone power control, delivering the required amount of heat just where it is needed. It is described as the optimum solution for wooden floors because it cannot overheat, even if overlapped. The power mats are well suited to renovation projects as they have virtually no impact on floor height.
