Essential support for the security and safety systems in Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport is provided by critical power-protection systems from Chloride Power Protection.
Chloride Power Protection has been chosen as the preferred supplier by the T5 buying club for the supply of all critical power-protection systems for Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. The wholly owned subsidiary Chloride Harath is responsible for on-going service and maintenance — supported by Chloride’s LIFE.net remote monitoring and diagnostics. package. In the main terminal building, power protection was required for the data centres. It is provided by three 90-NET 300 kVA UPSs with the Vector digital control system to enable all overloads, frequency variations, transient disturbances, brief interruptions and blackouts to be eliminated in real time. Processing signals digitally is 10 times faster than analogue methods. Another 300 kVA UPS and two 120 kVA UPSs support the control room and service centre. 50 and 25 kVA units protect baggage handling, control and scanning operations. The extensive communications system has backup provided by eight 10 kVA and six 3 kVA UPSs for the LAN infrastructure and eight 3 kVA UPSs for the IP telephony. T5 has the UK’s largest fire-detection, voice-alarm and public-address system, which is backed up by 12 UPSs rated at 3 kVA each. The back-up systems are under continuous surveillance by the LIFE.net remote monitoring package, reporting to Chloride’s constantly manned UK service centre — meaning that Chloride effectively takes responsibility for the health of the UPS.
