Pupils from Eastlea Community School in Newham in East London gained an insight into the construction industry when their school took part in the coaching scheme organised by the ConstructionSkills team at the Construction Industry Council. This scheme aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to learn about the wide range of professional careers available in the construction industry from a respected local built-environment professional. Monthly coaching sessions are complemented by external visits and practical activities. Pupils from the school visited Canary Wharf, where they were welcomed by Gay Harrington and Andrew Heath-Richardson of Canary Wharf Group Plc. Andrew explained how he had started his career as an apprentice electrician and now manages the construction process for new sites being developed on the Canary Wharf Estate. They were also taken to a housing regeneration scheme in Bermondsey to see a construction site close up.
