Scroll-compressor chillers maintain efficiency at part load

Zafiro water-cooled scroll chillers from Johnson Controls use R410A and are said to be the first such chillers in the UK to achieve Class A efficiency. These chillers can product chilled water from 15°C down to –12°C with condenser water temperatures from 18 to 50°C. 14 models provide cooling capacities from 188 to 580 kW with sound levels as low as 64 dB(A). Zafiro chillers use scroll-compressor technology that does not suffer reduced efficiency at part load, so they can achieve European seasonal energy-efficiency ratio as high as 7.24. Accurate control is achieved by the new IPU micro-processor controller, which manages the temperature of the chilled water while reducing power to the compressors. The controller can be linked with the BACnet protocol, enabling Zafiro chillers to be integrated into a building-management system.

More refrigerant bans possible, says government

The government could tighten up the rules that restrict the use of global warming refrigerant gases including speeding up phase-out programmes and introducing new bans, according to a spokesman from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Baxi research suggests schools strongly support heat decarbonisation

A survey conducted by Baxi of 200 state school estates managers, consultant engineers and M&E contractors has found that while enthusiasm for Net Zero and support for low carbon heating systems in schools is thriving, persistent barriers remain.
