CHP achieves 12 years in dungeon at Windsor Castle

Combined-heat-and-power plant installed at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle has reduced carbon emissions by over 2800 t since it was installed. These CHP units provide the main source of electricity and heating for the palaces, with an electrical output of 228 kW and heat output of 358 kW and were installed in the 12 years ago. The unit at Windsor Castle is in a dungeon, and its installation is described by Peter Law, a director of Ener-g, which installed it, as a ‘feat of engineering’. The machine was built in the company’s Salford factory, tested and then stripped to its basic components. It was then rebuilt in the windowless dungeon to displace a high proportion of boiler capacity. The Royal Household has been working on reducing its energy consumption for the past 22 years.
