Carrier joins in with the Genome project

A 27 000 m2 extension for the Wellcome Trust genome campus outside Cambridge represents the largest single application of Carrier Global chillers in the UK in recent months. Eleven 30 Series chillers, two dry coolers and 600 unit coolers will provide 7 MW of cooling for the first phase of this project. The order is worth about £1 million. Three 1 MW chillers serve the research support facilities, supplying cooling for a ducted air-conditioning system which provides a mix of variable and constant air volume to 40 different rooms. A major biological computing centre is at the heart of the campus and is an exceptionally highly serviced building. It has a central emergency generator and a power absorption density of 2 kW/m2. Four chillers serve this facility, also with two dry coolers to provide the energy-saving benefits of free cooling at low ambient temperatures. An upflow and downflow distribution pattern of unit coolers has been installed above the banks of computers to create a curtain of cooled air in front of them. Main contractor is Mace, with Axima Building Services as mechanical-services contractor and FaberMaunsell as services consultant.
