PIR sensors take The Edge off cabling costs

The costs associated with cabling for switching lighting have been reduced by using PIR sensors in open-plan offices in The Edge in Manchester.
Passive infra-red (PIR) occupancy detectors from CP Electronics are used as part of the lighting-control system for The Edge development in Manchester to reduce the amount of wiring to light switches and the cost of its associated installation. The use of PIR sensors was proposed by Axima Building Services. The company’s Steve Newley explains, ‘The original design would have necessitated large banks of light switches throughout each floor, with a requirement for extensive cabling. By using PIR sensors, we have achieved significant reductions in installation time by minimising the amount of cabling. In addition, the tenant will benefit from ongoing energy savings through optimised use of electricity for lighting.’ This mixed-use development comprises apartments, offices and retail outlets. Lighting in open-plan offices is divided into zones of 10 luminaires, each linked to a modular box in the ceiling. Each box is connected to a PIR sensor, providing control of on/off switching in response to occupancy. Some 75 sensors are used throughout the three storeys of offices.
