Fort Dunlop becomes Largest Mitsubishi water-cooled VRF air-conditioning installation
The refurbished Fort Dunlop in Birmingham has become the largest installation of Mitsubishi Electric water-cooled VRF air conditioning
Over 120 Mitsubishi Electric water-cooled WR2 air-conditioning systems have been installed as part of the refurbishment of Fort Dunlop in Birmingham by Urban Splash — making it the largest such system in the UK. Fort Dunlop now provides modern offices and contemporary retail space. During the Second World War, it made Spitfire planes. Installed by Skyline Air Conditioning, the WR2 systems meet the heating and cooling demands of the building. Multi-port BC controllers enable the building to benefit from heat recovery, using heat removed from one part of the building as it is cooled to heat another area. The project also includes over 120 Lossnay heat-recovery ventilation units. Skyline was responsible for the air-conditioning installation throughout the building, providing controls and remote zone controllers for each floor. There are 24 Mitsubishi G50A centralised controllers per floor, in addition to 180 wired remote controllers to provide control of each indoor unit. The WR2 condensing units are in internal plant rooms, four to a floor, and serve over 700 ducted fan coils. John Bradshaw of Skyline explains, ‘To preserve the integrity of the original architecture, the internal floor was raised and we used the void below as a pathway for concealing all of the air-conditioning systems’ distribution, electrical power and control cables.’
